Wow, I was so happy to find out that maternity care the way we Dutch people know it, also exists abroad! For weeks I had been feeling really bummed to find out that the phenomenon Kraamzorg outside of the Netherlands isn’t an automatic part of health care after delivering a baby, when I decided to search for kraamzorg buitenland on the internet. First I found a ridiculously expensive possibility that I disregarded right away. And rightfully so, because I continued my search and this is how I found www.kraamzorg-nl.nl, Nel Visser’s site.

Not only did she charge a lot less, also the description of the care provided seemed a lot more flexible and if you mention a few words that describe Nel really well then flexible is certainly one of them. I got in touch with her by e-mail and we kept in touch in this way until our little girl was born. Even if there was the possibility to meet face to face up front I really didn’t feel the necessity.

On the day that Isabella Augusta was born, I called Nel and she arrived in Naples, Italy on the day that we were to leave the hospital.  She started helping, caring, working right away at the moment of her arrival. In the hospital nobody assisted in the breastfeeding part and the night before Nel’s arrival I had been up all night trying to feed our little girl but without any success. Nel came, saw and took over. She came into action right away which led to going home with a quiet, satisfied child. From that moment on we didn’t have to worry about anything but enjoying the time together.

As mentioned Nel is flexible but she is also very caring, she spots problems right away and has a solution at hand. She does nothing without explaining it to you first and asking if you are ok with it. She never once looked at the clock and said, “oh my, look at the time…” , whereas I often thought, “oh my, look at the time and you’re still here with us!” Beside the very professional care provided by Nel, she’s also a very loving person and she’s great company, and then I haven’t even mentioned her cooking skills yet! We enjoyed, learned and laughed a lot this period.

My daughter’s father is Italian and when I started talking about kraamzorg he never really understood and wondered if it was really necessary to have somebody coming over from the Netherlands just for a week or maybe two, to help with the baby, until he saw Nel in action! He felt and saw what happened and within an hour of Nel’s presence he too understood!  

As may be clear from the above, we had a wonderful time with Nel and I advice you not to doubt the benefits of kraamzorg but to get in touch with Nel and have her work her magic, also in your little family. We are very happy that we did and it was an honour to have her over!

"We would like the readers of this website to know how good maternity care by Nel Visser worked for us.

Nel visit us in March 2009 in Paris for a prior introduction and to ensure that she woulth give us the care after the birth we disired. That felt real good and was a reassurance. Because in France there is really no such thing as maternity care and family and friends sometimes live very remote.

After the birth of our daughter Kamika on June 3 and staying a few days in the clinic, Nel arrived actually right after our homecoming to eas us and to advise and assist us in the first week at home with Kamika, wich was quite exciting.
Nel took all the in-house work out of our hands, wich gave Sandra the oppertunity to rest after the strenuous job and Henk-Erik could do the things at work who could not wait.
This gave us enough energy to enjoy our daughter to the fullest. And when we were not quite sure as parents debuting, Nel was there to reassure us and explain how we could handle the situation the best way. She used all her expertise about breastfeading, which received insufficient attention in the clinic the fist days , and got it on track.
All week she provide us with fine dining, from breakfast in bed to supper.
We experienced a short, but great week and therefore we warmly recommend her super luxury maternity".

"Because there is no maternity care in Dubai, and our family was not able to gave us some help in the first weeks, it was a great outcome that Nel's maternitycare grants abroad. The e-mail and telephone contact in advance of the birth was very nice and Nel gave clear explanations about what we could expect from her care.

Our son was born one week earlier than expected, on January 1, 2010, but because Nel had taken this into account, she was immediately available. As new parents we had many questions about how the care for Bram should go and Nel was there to provide us with some great help. Breastfeeding, sleep, baths, everything we had to learn and Nel gave us good advice and guidance. She showed us the direction but we kept controle. She also checked my progress and health after childbirth. And of course all the daily chores were taken care of. From laundry, general cleaning to cooking dinner, breakfast in bed and even fresh apple pie everything was provided by Nel.

For us it was a great week, we have had all the time to get acquainted with Bram and to learn how to care for him. If we are lucky to get a second child in the future, I hope Nel again available!

Review
It has been almost one month since we have said Nel Visser goodbye, but the week together is still fresh in our memory. Our first contact was by phone and because the due date was weeks before the expected date, I did not expect that Nel still would be available. But after some involving emails / text messages back and forth, she stood on the sidewalk the day I came home. Of course this is exciting, because eventually you have never met, but there was a click immediatly. Nel is an enthusiastic personality and knows how to match the needs / expectations of the family. In our case, the fourth child in our family, quite busy so, but Nel did well to divide her attention.
The emphasis was less on the care of mother & child, but all the more special attention to the other three children. (Roel 7 years, almost 6 year old Emma & Anne almost 3). Besides spoiling me and taking care of the daily routine of the family, Nel undertook many 'extra' activities with the other children. The kids enjoyed the cookies baked, swim, play games ect. And therefore had not noticed that they had to share mommy's attention with their new sister.

Every night there was a delicious meal on the table and when I lay the 4 kids in bed, there was a moment of rest. Sometimes we had a nice chat in wich she gave feedback, sometimes it's just nice to hear that you are doing well as parents.
Nel insists nothing and let you free in your choices, she gives tips, but only if you need them yourself. I loved it that I was not "forced" to lying in bed, but just relaxing downstairs among the people.

Our week with Nel went very smoothly and everyone had their own way to benefit. Nel checks all regular of evering is going well and her communicating is clearly. This gives no chance of misunderstanding and you will know exactly what you have together. (Also good for the kids, who accepted her authority from day one!)

Nel stayed in our house, but we have not experienced that as troublesome, she respects the privacy of the family and withdraw if necessary. Nel is not a person of the clock and just help where needed, even if that sometimes means long days.

So all in all we look back on a successful week, so if you doubt, just do it! And if you want more detailed information, you can reach us by Nel.
